The house, which is over 200 years old, was first rennovated in 1979. It used to be a wine merchants house: he kept his barrels in the rooms on the ground floor and lived above them, accessing these rooms via the lovely outside staircase, which is typical of houses in the region and can be seen in the photo on the right. The area at the top of the stairs makes an unusual balcony and has a beautiful stone basin.

Entering the house through the front door you come into the kitchen/dining room. This is a beautiful room with a 15th century wooden mantelpiece which was originally in a nunnery. The kitchen is fully-equipped for 12 people and depending on numbers, you should all fit around the large dining table. This room, with its wooden beams and tiled floor, is a wonderful place to enjoy a log fire in the evenings.

Through the kitchen/dining room is the sitting room. This too has a fireplace, albeit a much more modern one, which can also heat the bedroom above. The floor is tiled and the room has plenty of seating space including two sofa-beds. There is also a stereo with a cd/tuner and a TV with a DVD/video player. Leading off this room is a double bedroom.

Off the kitchen is a bathroom with a tiled floor and a bath/shower, basin and toilet. There is a washing machine here too. Hot water is provided from an electric boiler.

Going upstairs, there are four bedrooms. Two of them have twin single beds, the other two have double beds. All the bedrooms have wooden floors and outside windows. The two front rooms have beautiful views over the stream running through the garden and surrounding countryside and the two back rooms have skylights as well. The bathroom has a modern shower, basin and toilet. The other double room has a door leading to the outside steps mentioned in the opening paragraph.

The five bedrooms mean that 10 people can sleep in comfort, two to a room. Every room is equipped with duvets and bedding is there if required. ETen is the number that I have fully-equipped the house for, however, if wanted, the two sofa-beds in the sitting room are double beds, so the house can sleep 14 people. In this case though, you will need to bring extra bedding for the four people, but there are enough glasses, crockery etc. there. The house has thick stone walls, which means that it is cool in summer (which is welcome as temperatures regularly reach the high 20s, low 30s in July and August) but can be cold in winter as there is no central heating, although every room has an electric radiator and there are two fireplaces. The road running past the house is only for the 8 houses in the village and is off the main road, so traffic is certainly not a problem!

Going outside of the house, there is a patio area which is perfect for the long summer evenings. Outside chairs and a table are provided for you. From here you have a spectacular view over the stream, to the farmhouses beyond and it really is wonderfully relaxing to sit here over a good meal and a glass of wine, watching the sun setting and the stars coming out.

The hamlet is very small with 8 houses. There are no facilities whatsoever but this adds to the charm, peace and quiet. In front of the house is a well, which is theoretically still in use. Joined to the house are two barns - one is unused and the other belongs to the house. There are also a couple of outbuildings which are used for storage at the moment but are in the process of being turned into a walled, sheltered garden. The house on the left is a holiday home so is not often being used. Other houses are mainly owned by French farmers. About 1.5km to the South is the village of St. Front which has a telephone and a cafe. If you would like some fresh croissants youll have to go a little further to the village of Valence which has a bakery or you can travel 4km in the other direction to Aunac where there are several local shops and a restaurant. The nearest supermarket is at Mansle, 9km towards Angoulême.

Prices are quoted in euros for the house per week and fortnight (2 weeks) but longer stays are possible by arrangement and the price will be adjusted accordingly. The price does not include gas, electricity, water and firewood. A deposit of half the cost of your stay is required upon booking. This sum, minus the cost of the utilities, will be refunded after your holiday. There is a 5% reduction should you bring your own towels and bed linen. It is possible to rent the house over the winter months but not advisable as it is very cold inside. However, should you wish to come in winter then please contact me for more information and bring lots of pullovers!!
